 The allure of temporary work
The allure of temporary work

By Katie Morell
Contributing Writer

While some job seekers may steer clear of temporary employment and focus all of their efforts on a full-time position, Eric Buntin, managing director of operations for Randstad, encourages those people to think again.

“Temporary work is a fantastic way to network and to get your foot in the door with an organization,” he said. “It is always easier to find a job when you have a job because you are networking with more people. Once you are working for an organization, there are many opportunities that could open up in that company.

“It gives you an opportunity to add to your skills and add to your resume. Even if you consider a position at a lower skill level than you are used to, the position can make you valuable to a new employer in the future.”

As the pool of part-time employment seekers grows larger, so does the level of scrutiny by which employers use to evaluate the available talent.

German Cordova, manager at Elite Staffing in Aurora, believes companies seeking temporary employees are searching for the cream of the crop.

“They are looking for skilled individuals and they are looking for someone who has a desire to perform at a high level every day,” he said. “They don’t want someone who is complacent. They are also looking for people with experience who can really come in and hit the ground running. They are much choosier these days.”

John Syverson, vice president and territory manager for Kelly Services in Arlington Heights, said his clients are looking for three key character traits in a temporary employee.

“You have to have the skills for the job, you have to have flexibility to go where the client is located and you have to have a good attitude,” he said. “If you have those three things, you can do well.”
