 Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce
Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce

The Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce is paving the way toward a “greener” world, and after serving the Tinley Park area business community for more than 53 years, it’s ready to fulfill the mission statement of “bringing innovative opportunities to business and community to create a strong economy” by going green.

With the “Small Steps Toward Big Impact” initiative under way, the Chamber plans to lead by example for its business community. The first part of the program focuses on “going green.” To that end, the Chamber now double sides all promotional fliers that are mailed out to members, saving paper; turning off the office lights one hour each day, saving energy; and is recycling canned and paper goods in the office, to help the environment.

“We want to get it into people’s minds that these little things you can do will make a big difference,” said Chamber president and CEO Bernadette Shanahan-Haas. “With area businesses and our community seeing us doing it, we want to be a leader and say, ‘See, it’s not so hard.’”

As a leader in the southwest suburbs, the Tinley Park Chamber is working toward a healthier environment for both area businesses as well as the surrounding community.

Its “Small Steps Towards Big Impact” project is about just that, in effect, the small things everyone can do that will positively affect the working and living conditions in the Tinley Park area.

“We want to set a precedent for people. If our office can do it, so can they,” said Shanahan-Haas. “If they take these little steps it’s not as hard as some people think. It’s really about the smaller stuff.”

The second step in the program is to encourage voter turnout within the community. Anyone in Illinois can now come to the Tinley Park Chamber office and register to vote. The chamber is a bona fide state civic organization, with two of its staff members, Shanahan-Haas and member services coordinator Melinda Krieher both official Deputy Registrars in the state.

“We think it’s very important that you vote since every vote counts,” said Shanahan-Haas. “We want to make it easy for our members and the community to be able to come here and register.”

The chamber has made it easy; if a business member or resident is not registered to vote, they can now come to the Chamber office with two forms of identification and register to vote.

With the “Small Steps Toward Big Impact” initiative in place, the Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce is paving the way towards a “greener” and more involved business and residential community.

“It’s an initiative we’re doing throughout the year,” said Shanahan-Haas. “We’re here at the Chamber being a resource.”
