Rapid growth expected in Will County
According to forecasts by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, the population in Will County is expected to grow by 121 percent from now to 2030.
More than 600,000 people and 190,000 households are to be added to the region, making it the most populous county of the collar counties, and surpassing longtime leader—and relatively built-out—DuPage County by more than 100,000 residents.
“We’re the crossroads of America,” said Lawrence M. Walsh, Will County executive.
Of the top 15 municipalities expected to gain the most number of people from 2000 to 2030, nine are in Will County.
The city poised for the most growth is New Lenox. Its population is expected to grow from 17,771 in 2000 to 90,652 in 2030—a 72,881 person increase.
Other cities expected to make substantial jumps in population from 2000 to 2030 include: • Plainfield (52,436 person increase) • Frankfort (45,406 person increase) • Manhattan (41,037 person increase) • Joliet (34,603 person increase) • Shorewood (30,712 person increase) • Crete (30,693 person increase) • Monee (27,847 person increase)
According to the Will County Center for Economic Development, the county’s population has more than doubled in the last 20 years while its total employment has increased 75 percent in that time span.
Since the 2000 census, Will is estimated to have gained 165,950 residents, by far the largest increase of Illinois’s 102 counties and 10th highest among the nation’s 3,141 counties.
Additionally, Will is ranked 36th nationally in new job creation, due in part to its diversified economic base and advantageous rail and highway infrastructure.
“(The economy) is kind of slow right now,” said Ivan Baker, economic development director for Tinley Park, “but we’re still blowing and going.”
